À 19 ans, Jake LaMotta passe pour un boxeur plein d'avenir. Un combat perdu le renvoie toutefois dans la salle d'entraînement pour perfectionner son jeu de jambes et ses coups trop tendres. Managé par son frère, Joey, il est approché par des mafieux qui veulent le prendre en main. Jake refuse. Enchaînant les combats, il monte dans la hiérarchie mondiale, jusqu'à disputer le titre à Marcel Cerdan. Sa victoire acquise, Jake pense que la fortune va enfin lui sourire. En fait, c'est le déclin qui s'annonce. Le boxeur connaît des difficultés personnelles car son mariage bat de l'aile. Jake perd son titre face à son pire adversaire, Sugar Ray Robinson.
